Individual needs drive species' adaptations. What we do as individuals to adapt is what we view as beneficial to ourselves as individuals, and it has implications (consequences) for the species. Recognizing our place in the small group, the extended family or group, the community and the gender that our sex represents allows us to see that human interest is a combination of short term and long term awareness.
If economic and other support arrangements for survival originally defined gender roles, then what happens to gender when the market re-arranges and women start to earn as much or more than men? What happens individually, to individuals, to family (the traditional cradle of the individual) and what happens to the species?
