In South Africa, women now rape men

A 24 year old man was kidnapped and gang raped for 3 days.

"The issue of women raping men is now one of the major problems in South Africa. In fact, it is a source of embarrassment to us"

OK here is the Q: due 2 PP last day of class

what ONE finding or concept about gender "hit you" pointedly - and really made you think about and act towards gender in a new way.   You get 2 pages, and that includes your name and title.
  1. First specify the finding or the concept.
  2. Next bring in 2-3-4 other sources (discussion, videos, lectures, format of class, reading) that compliment or highlight your choice. Also associate the idea/concept with "real life"- either private or public life or both.
  3. Finally - sum it up and reveal how it does and will henceforth affect your life.

Addition to sex trade

I didn't finish my whole presentation because i ran out of time. This is some info that i would have like to presented.  "The ruling fundamentalists have differing opinions on their official position on the sex trade: deny and hide it or recognize and accommodate it. In 2002, a BBC journalist was deported for taking photographs of prostitutes. Officials told her: “We are deporting you … because you have taken pictures of prostitutes. This is not a true reflection of life in our Islamic Republic. We don’t have prostitutes.” Yet, earlier the same year, officials of the Social Department of the Interior Ministry suggested legalizing prostitution as a way to manage it and control the spread of HIV. They proposed setting-up brothels, called “morality houses,” and using the traditional religious custom of temporary marriage, in which a couple can marry for a short period of time, even an hour, to facilitate prostitution. Islamic fundamentalists’ ideology and practices are adaptable when it comes to controlling and using women."
Also this is how females get sold abroad: "According to several activist organizations, traffickers ferry their victims overseas illegally on forged passports or "legally" through forced marriages, sometimes abusing the Islamic tradition that allows a man to have four wives. A trafficker "will marry four, he will take them to Syria, it's legal, and divorce them there, and he comes back and does it again"   Read more: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1890728,00.html#ixzz0x2BG8F37

Matriarchal Societies

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Mosuo-One-of-the-Last-Matriarchal-Societies-36321.shtml

The Mosuo people are one of the few matriarchal societies left. It is interesting to see how the dynamics of the relationships they have with the opposite sex differ from those in most patriarchal societies. In their society sex is practiced freely and to them, what we consider to be a normal marriage is heresy. Another interesting point brought up in the article is that in their language there is no word for rape, and it is not due to the fact that it does not exist (it's just not as common).   Video on Mosuo Culture

Homosexuality in the Torah

In class today a couple of you asked us what the Torah said about homosexuality ...some info I gathered on the topic from various sites. My Jewish Learning:   An important point to make ..... Wikipedia:  The subject of homosexuality in Judaism dates back to the Torah, in the books of Bereshit and Vayiqra. Bereshit (Genesis) treats the destruction of the cities of Sedom and Amorrah by God. Vayiqra (Leviticus) forbids sexual intercourse between males, classifying it as a to'eivah (something abhorred or detested) that can be subject to capital punishment under Jewish law, although Halakhic courts are not authorized to administer capital punishment in the absence of a Temple in Jerusalem and the entire judicial system as mandated by Jewish Law.
The issue has been a subject of contention within modern Jewish denominations and has led to debate and division. The current view of Orthodox Judaism has been to regard homosexual intercourse as contradictory to Judaism, since it is categorically forbidden by the Torah. However, homosexual orientation, if not acted upon sexually, is permissible since the Torah only forbids homosexual intercourse, not homosexual desires. However, Reconstructionist Judaism and Reform Judaism do not hold this view and validate homosexual intercourse. Conservative Judaism's Committee on Jewish Law and Standards, which until December 2006 held the same position as Orthodoxy, recently issued multiple opinions under its philosophy of pluralism, with one opinion ...Homosexuality in the Torah Further information: The Bible and homosexuality
The Torah, the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, reflects the Judaism of ancient Israel and serves as the primary source for traditional Jewish laws and values.
The traditional viewpoint is that the Torah mentions homosexuality twice in the book of Leviticus (JPS):וְאֶת-זָכָר—לֹא תִשְׁכַּב, מִשְׁכְּבֵי אִשָּׁה: תּוֹעֵבָה, הִוא.Lev.18,22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination.
Lev.20,13 And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Article: "How Does Birth Order Affect Relationships?"

LINK: "How Does Birth Order Affect Relationships?"
Quote :
" 'Your personality is directly related to how you interact with other people,' says William Cane, author of The Birth Order Book of Love, since the first people you interacted with were your parents and siblings. Figuring out your own birth-order personality, and that of your significant other, is simply one strategy you can use to assess your compatibility..."
Sounds a bit like astrology to me, but women's magazines, web sites always seem to have some form of it. I wonder why? Anyway, it's a fun read and I thought it was interesting because it doesn't have any gender designations in regards to the birth order and the personalities that correspond to them.

Article: "More Couples Sleeping Apart: Is this Healthy?"

LINK: "More Couples Sleeping Apart : Is this Healthy?"

The article answers with the following quote

" To get to the bottom of it, we asked Tina B. Tessina Ph.D. (a.k.a. Dr. Romance), psychotherapist and author of Money, Sex, and Kids: Stops Fighting About the Three Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage, for her take:

'Sleeping apart can contribute to the disconnect that plagues many relationships,' Tessina says. 'It just makes it easier to avoid each other, when what's really needed is connection and contact. There are solutions to snoring and restlessness -- a memory foam mattress will stop restlessness from being felt by a partner and snoring can be helped in a number of ways.' "
Then it gives the reader reasons why couples should sleep together in the same bed.

I think it's relative to the couple. My girlfriends and I had a conversation about this and most of them, specially the married ones, including myself, don't mind sleeping separately from our significant-others on occasion.  They said it shouldn't matter because a couple's connection should not just be based on the ability to sleep together - and what if the couple work different shifts? Besides, they said, we see our significant-others everyday haha. What do you think?

Gender Papers

Opening paragraph(s) should introduce the topic briefly and touch on each article as its way to shine a light on the topic .... Middle section (maybe 3-5 paragraphs) should "go with" one article in particular and focus on your experience in life, public or private. The focus will be on what stands out for you in one of the articles, but the best papers will weave in the other articles as "spices." ....  The final paragraph will sum up, give implications, and the "what am I going to do about it."

Since you have citations, there should be a references section.

SOME early papers - to help you all

5 handed in early Tannen papers. Here are my email comments to them-they may help U.

Hi, all. There are 5 of you in the BCC (blind carbon copy) field. I have the same thing to say to 4 of you: part of the assignment was to bring light to your observation from one of our "foundational" thinkers or ideas - Mead, Eisler, the videos, the lectures. One of you did that (you used Mead). All the others did not do that - although your papers were very interesting.
You may think you do not have the room to add comments tying your thoughts to the foundational thinkers or observations. Comb through your papers to see where you can eliminate words. E.g., you do not need to say things like "One aspect I find very interesting is ..." Of course it is you and of course you found it interesting or you would not be writing it. Likewise, "It is my understanding that ..." Of course it is your understanding - or you would not be writing it. So comb through the paper to eliminate excess wording. Get it down to the bone. Then you will make some room to connect to others' thoughts & observations.

You can also make room by putting:  Name, Soce 341, Title - all on 1 line. Use good ink.

Again, your papers were good - each one could be EVEN BETTER.

The reason women fight...

Why is it that everytime a young girl, teenage girl, or grown woman are in a fight/ disagreement/arguement with another girl/teen/woman it's over a guy????

Think about it...women don't really argue about anything else. It's always "She stole my boyfriend" (or even worse, husband!), or there's an ex-girlfriend that you can't stand, or you and your best friend like the same guy so now you're mad at eachother, some girl keeps staring at your boyfriend/husband. Not saying that these things are always pointless disagreements, becaue there are some women out there who will go for men that are unavailable. But so many times I've seen women get mad at other women and not at the man that is also involved in the situation. If your boyfriend cheats, then damn right you have the right to be mad at the other woman, but don't act like he was a victim and stay with him but hold an everlasting grudge on the other woman. Don't ruin a great friendship over a guy who will most likely break up with you eventually, then you'll have no best friend AND no boyfriend! If that's the case, it should be true love, and it should be absolutely worth the consequences (in the long run).

I feel like men (even as little boys and teenagers) have a much greater solidarity amongst each other than women do. They're more about brotherhood, and they're more loyal to their friends (not all, but most). If women could be like that, they would rule the world!!! seriously.  So ladies, don't let a relationship (or lack of) with a guy determine your self worth. Love yourselves, love your sisters!

I've noticed something...

Since being in Soc 341 (and even before that) I've noticed the double standard that society has for using derogatory terms against women versus using derogatory terms towards men. From my observations in media, music, slang, dialogue between other people, etc. (especially in the last five years or so) women have been openly referred to as "bitches". Pardon my french on the blog, but it relates to the topic. It seems like what originated as a term of insult to the female sex has now become a common nickname in America. In music today (especially rap) women are often referred to as bitches, broads, hoes; and sadly that language has trickled down into everyday society and impressionable young men and women use it in their everyday vocabulary. There's a new song on the radio called "Sexy Bitch" by David Guetta ft. Akon. The lyrics are, and I quotee "She's nothing like a girl you've ever seen before, had to stop what I was doing so I could pul her close, I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful....Damn you a sexy bitch!" Are those the best words he could find to describe his attraction to her?! Does he really consider that to be respectful and are women expected to accept that? Another example, there is a new saying that people use with each other, often in a joking manner when tell friends not to do something stupid. They say "Don't be that guy" when talking to a guy, and when talking to a girl I've heard both guys and girls say "Don't be that bitch".,,why couldn't it be "Don't be that girl".

It left me thinking, have we become so desensitized to degrading names towards women to the point where we use them effortlessly? It also seems that in our society there are not common/everyday degrading terms used for a man. Of course there ARE terms of insult that you could use for a guy (i.e., tool, prick, douche bag, etc.) but you do not hear the use of those words being used to refer to a guy on a general bases. In fact, you rarely hear it, and when you do it is from someone who is angry with or making fun of that guy. But you won't hear it in music to refer to the general male sex, like you would a derogatory term for a female. I've also noticed that if you want to really REALLY offend a guy, what do you do?...you call him a Bitch! Which men hate because it is condescending and demasculinizing.

So what message is society really sending? Is it subliminal way to keep women "in their place"?
We can be powerful, we can be sexy, we can be intelligent, we can be independent but at the end of the day we're still bitches? It's got me thinking....

What do you think?

Gender Role?

Man Burns Down House Because Wife Didn't Have Dinner ReadyUpdated: 9:26 PM May 24, 2010
SISSONVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police in Kanawha County say it's unlike any case of domestic violence they've ever seen. Sun. night, Beverly Jones says her husband of 7 years returned home from a night of drinking with friends. Beverly says her husband, Guy, became upset that his dinner wasn't ready and on the table.
"He started throwing furniture and tore up all the glass tables," Beverly Jones said. "Then he told me I had to get out because he was going to burn the house down. He told me if I didn't get out he would burn me with the house."
Guy followed through with his threat, and a short while later, the Jones' home of 10 years was gone. The whole ordeal has left Beverly and her friends wondering why.
"Why would you burn your own things," Beverly Jones said. "If he didn't want to be with me, all he had to do is say 'I don't want to be with you.'"
For Beverly's best friend, Lana Taylor, seeing everything her friend had ever worked for go up in flames is almost too much. She says the fact it was all over Guy's dinner not being ready makes her even more furious.
"Why," Taylor said. "Why did he feel he had to burn down the house. Why was that so important? Its not like he can't cook. He can cook."
In the end, Beverly says her husband not only destroyed their home, but also their marriage.
"We're headed for divorce court just as fast as I can get there," Beverly Jones said. "I hope I don't see him again."

My gender experience.

I didnt say my gender experience because i was too shy. Ok so when i first got in the class & we talked about feminine & masculine i noticed that all of the feminine qualities everyone were mentioning was me. I was always so feminine. I mean i am a girl but wow i was the typical stereotype of a "girl". I was needy, dependant, insecure, jealous, too sensitive. Wow everything! So now i started being different and more independent. I actually went to pump gas & to the stores by myself. I could never do that before. I feel so good about myself now. I dont have to depend on anyone. Thanks to this class i am not a pushover anymore. LOL I was always so nice and such a crybaby. I got that off my chest. Even my relationship with my boyfriend is alot better. =)

Guys can have a tough time too

This has occurred to me a couple of times before...Girls, women, can be as sexualized as they want, as weak as they want, as strong as they want, as tough as they want, as soft as they want, as boyish as they want. The post(?)-feminism atmosphere in the U.S. today means women do get lots of chances to express themselves as people first, females second, as long as they are prepared to accept all ramifications of equality: i.e., the draft.

Now what about guys? Aren't guys, men, still restricted in quite a few ways from being who they want to be? Don't they actually have it tougher in some respects?

circle today - I wanted to say many things.

  • I liked the person saying that no, we are not all the same we are all different - so we are the same in that we are all different.  That's more like it, paradoxical though it is.
  • I liked being reminded art and creativity "comes from" those on the bottom of the ladders, any ladder.
  • I liked the challenge of equality in the draft - all Israeli children serve in the army.  All of them.  Then after that, they go to college.   They are all trained and equalized in the army. Everyone then can ask of all young people:  "What did you make of yourself in the army?" There are many jobs in the army that do not involve "heavy lifting."  Of course that's easy for me to say since I am past draft age.
  • I liked the air conditioner theory and the story about the cereal and the important sense of community
  • I liked the assertion that somehow by being together we will be less likely to be cavalier and put others down in the future, outside this class
  • I liked learning about Mamie Mobley and how she turned tragedy into love instead of into hate
  • I liked how non talkers made us talkers listen
  • I liked being reminded I only have hold of the elephant's left leg - or is it his right - not his whole.
  • I liked how the bell rang and left us to continue Monday - and may we be as courageous and revolutionary as Mamie Mobley
  • here is Dr. Martin Luther King on how love is the strongest force.  Watch how slowly and carefully and thoughtfully he speaks compared with speakers on TV today.

The layers of gender

Which "layer" coaxed and coaxes YOU most to be womanly, manly? and straight.
Which "layer" coaxes YOU most today to undo the above coaxing? and straight.
  • Self - sense of self
  • Partner - S.O. or mate
  • Friends - your buddies, clique.  Which friends do you choose?  those who are very M or F or who are very mixed and open?
  • Family - your mom, dad, and sibs
  • Neighborhood - just the "feeling" of those around you "on the street"
  • Work - are you "caught" in a gendered job or in a anti-gender role at work
  • School - do your teachers "get" you to be M F or straight - or to let it go
  • City - does Los Angeles 'liberate' you or trap you?
  • some experience - prison, army, the nunnery, parenting, abuse, love - does it coax u?
  • CA - does the state "do" something to you to make you M or F or straight or gay

OMG I'm talking like a man!

So yesterday i was washing clothes right and i tell my bf to come help. Well he was on his PS3 and of course wouldnt listen. I got so mad & screamed at him "MAN U NEVER WANNA HELP WITH THE GIRLY JOBS!!" He looked at me & started laughing his butt off & then a second later i realized what i said. I just laughed, i couldnt believe that unconsciously i branded washing a "girls job". That's something a man would say. LOL

Primitive Thinking

As I was sitting listening to a client of mine tell me what the roles of women and men are supposed to be--I found myself wondering what year are we in...!

This client was so adamant about what he saying--"I shouldn't have to tell my wife what her role is. She should know when to pick up after the baby--what to cook for dinner--how to clean to my standards. She shouldn't have to be told."

After pondering for a moment--I looked at him and couldn't help but asking him..."What year are we in?" He looked so confused, as if I was speaking a different language.

It still amazes me, although maybe it shouldn't, just how ingrained & accustomed we are in terms of defining gender. And that when it is challenged--just how miffed people can become.

Is Gender a natural or artificial classification?

During the winter quarter, CSULA's Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality put together a very informative panel discussion about the South African middle-distance runner and world champion Mokgadi Caster Semenya. After winning gold in the women's 800 meters at the 2009 World Championships in the finals, she was subjected to several gender tests. She considers herself a woman and has been running as a woman all of her life without scrutiny until this win.

Many discussions took place regarding the racial component of mass media's portrayal of Semenya and her "true" gender. An Australian newspaper was especially cruel about this issue. The results of her gender ambiguity was "leaked" by the newspaper before it was reported by the IAAF. Many believed that her privacy was violated and she had been humiliated in front of millions .
I think this is an interesting topic because it encompasses a female who is in the domain of men's world, sports, and it also questions our notions of true gender in terms of biology. We often think of gender as inherent and natural rather than something artificial and socialized. Semenya was pictured a couple of weeks after her gender test wearing a dress, makeup, and a weave. She was posing on the front cover of a tabloid to prove that she really is a woman. It made me wonder if the message of the magazine is to say that her womanhood is her attire, her aesthetic quality, and her appearance rather than her talent, sheer power, and determination.

Professor Talia Bettcher of the Philosopher department spoke about people's need to uncover a deep reality. As if Semenya's gender, boy or girl, would say something about her that is somehow more "real." Semenya as a human, as an athlete, as a world champion is somehow inadequate or simply questionable. She had to be understood by looking underneath, at her chromosomes, xx/xy for a "true" gender: Her "real" identity.
Now, some argue that the IAAF is performing the gender verification test for the fairness of the sport, much like it would perform doping tests. In the panel we had a biologist and a Kinesiologist who looked at Semenya's preliminary results and both concluded that she would not have any physical advantage over the other athletes due to the complications testosterone has on her system. If this is in fact the case, then her gender would be irrelevant.

I would like to attach a PDF of a long but worthy article about Gender verification. It is from the book:
Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of Sexuality. The article is called Dueling Dualism. I studied it in my Gender and Science class here at CSULA. It really puts things into perspective. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the subject of gender. I can give it to you if you come ask me or if you teach me how to put it up. The link is the amazon of the book.

Child Marriage sentences 60mill girls around the world to a life of poverty

This was sent to me today and wanted to share with everyone:  Marriage is a time for celebration and joy - unless you are one of the 60 million girls around the world forced into marriage before the age of 18.

Imagine the life those girls - and girls who are 7, 10 or 16 years of age - endure. Early marriage has lifelong consequences. Child brides have a diminished chance of completing their education and are at a higher risk of being physically abused, becoming pregnant at a young age and contracting deadly diseases, such as HIV.

It doesn't have to be this way. Help girls around the world by calling on U.S. government to take action that will help end this pervasive and heartbreaking human rights violation!  . . . Add your Voice!!

Today's Film

I really enjoyed today's film. I have watched the film before and it was good to be reminded that men and women conversations are indeed different. Men will take in conversations in a whole different way compared to women, it is just their nature. Only because he seems not to be listening does not mean he is not listening. It reminds me of my own relationship and as I think about I could say that many of the arguments I have had with my partner are due to not understanding his "conversational rituals."

Understanding the differences between men and women, I think, can make relationships better. A man will never be what a women expects and vice versa and that is because we are socialized differently. . . . . . . Great film.

1.  Overall Theme . . 2. Particulars . . 3. What will you "do about it."
The film is
available in Library, 3rd FL. U can watch it there.
What did she mean when she said "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" does not always work across the sexes, each w. a unique "conversational style."

One of the best books I have read on the condition of the "Female" today

Laura Kipnis is by far one of my favorite contemporary writers and commentators. She writes intellectual prose and witty truth about the condition of the female psyche as well as our constant conflict dealing with ourselves and the people in our lives. I first fell in love with her when I read her book Against Love, A Polemic and decided to work on an independent work study on the genealogy of marriage. Then her book The Female Thing: Dirt, Envy, Sex, Vulnerability came out. This book is hilarious, provocative, outrageously heartbreaking at times, but most of all thought provoking. I recommend it to anyone interested in the topic of gender and sexuality.
My partner and I read this out loud to each other on our book reading dates. Yes, we are nerds. We had lots of fun, but we also had many deep discussions about the topics in the book. We certainly did not agree with everything Ms. Kipnis suggests but we were compelled to reassess how we interact with each other and put her theories to test.

When hate is fought with hate no one wins

I would like to present this video it is of a Anti-Nazi Protest that I hope many of you were aware about. in this protest the Nazi's were against everyone else. They talked bad and down about not just races but sexualities. They piled all hispanics as Mexican's and all blacks as Africans and that they should all go back to their prospective countries. Regardless, I you should not fight hate with more hate. Their is an aesop fable I would like all who read this to look up. It is about the sun and the wind. But for now here is a video of mob mentality and fighting hate with more hate.

Lakers

First time blogging. I really don't know what to write about nor do I really know what blogging is but we'll see. So how about these Lakers? They start off the playoffs with a win and complete the first step to defending their NBA title. 15 more wins until they are once again crowned champions. It seems like the city of Los Angeles will have another Laker parade in June. Wait there is no seems, it's more like they will have another parade come June. Go Lakers!!! :)
