Economy and Gender

Individual needs drive species' adaptations. What we do as individuals to adapt is what we view as beneficial to ourselves as individuals, and it has implications (consequences) for the species. Recognizing our place in the small group, the extended family or group, the community and the gender that our sex represents allows us to see that human interest is a combination of short term and long term awareness.

If economic and other support arrangements for survival originally defined gender roles, then what happens to gender when the market re-arranges and women start to earn as much or more than men? What happens individually, to individuals, to family (the traditional cradle of the individual) and what happens to the species?

Middle books - socialization

So what do the experts say about what we are doing - and could or should do - when we are raising our sons and daughters? How are we socializing them into "doing gender"?

The Crock of Gold

Everyone can read the first 10 pages - The entire book is on line.
The women were 1. thin 2. gray - takes away the physical capital
The men were 1. thick skinned 2. hated the women's cooking - took away man's need for nuture
The women 1. disliked their own children but 2. liked the other woman's children. They swapped and all 6 lived together in the pine wood. Neither mothers nor fathers played much with the children - the mothers did not seem to know how; the fathers peered at them through thick glasses. The children found other playmates in the pine wood. ... "Curiosity will conquer fear even more than bravery will." This can lead to mishaps.
People came to the house to get advice from the 2 philosopher men. The men said many things including: ... "Knowledge becomes lumber in a week, so get rid of it."
The women had knowledge, too - but they would not share it! "A secret is a weapon and a friend." What happens next?
What is the relationship of love & wisdom, wisdom & love. Time & nature.

Why straight men don't hang out with gay men.

Its just uncomfortable because we may feel as if they're checking us out. Its happened to me. My ex girlfriend was friends with a gay guy and even though he knew we were in love he still made passes at me. Both were openly gay and flaunted it which kindof bothers me personally. Its kindof the same reason why its hard for a straight man to be friends with a good looking woman. If ther's an attraction there its really hard to get it out of our minds. Maybe its just me though.

mona lisa smiles

Yesterday my friends and I were watching Mona Lisa Smiles I love this movie I think I seen it like ten times. But every single time that I watched it I learned something new or I get more of the movie. The art professor teaches conservative 50's Wellesley girls to question their societal roles played by Julia Roberts. Roberts makes her students to think outside their traditionally roles. All of the students portrayed by women that after graduating from best University in the nation at the time in the 50’s needed to be married and not to think about what else they could do with their life. My favorite part is when Betty Warren played by Kristen Dunst tell her best friend look what I got what I always wanted and she shows her Joan Brandwyn played by Julia Stiles a washer and a dryer. I can not believe girls my age at the time that’s what they always wanted I thinks that’s pretty funny good thing time has change for us. Other scene in the movie that I like is when they started talking about birth control very immoral to have and the teachers or nurses couldn’t promote birth control if women where to have been found with women condoms they where looked as sluts. I love movies like this cause makes me glad and thankful in the century that I live in although we as women are still fighting.

Dating

Why is it usually the men asking the women out? What if... the norm was WOMEN asking the men out? How would that be different? Would our expected roles change? For females, would u want to ask a guy out or prefer men to do the asking ? . . . For males, how do u feel about a woman asking a guy out?

Part-Time work

Most employers often require a full-time commitment and reward those who conform to an "ideal worker norm" that demonstrates their loyalty and willingness to prioritize their workplace demands. This indeed, keeps part-time women from assuming leadership positions!

My question is: Is part-time work in women's best intersts? What can working mommys do in order to succeed as a person even though she has "labor" house commitment with children? Do you think that the norms/policies such as the "mommy track" at work are enough to help working mothers?

Is there such thing as "LOVE FOREVER", or it's just something we want to have forever with a person that we feel love for?
Does the love we have last forever?
What do males and females feel about this?

Conversations with males and females

After watching the movie last Wednesday I started to notice what and how I sit when I’m taking to my girlfriends in compared to my guy friends. And it is true when I was chatting with the girls other the weekend we always try to sit in a circle or we place ourselves in positions where we all can look at each other. When we are taking most of our conversation are about feelings and emotions ex-relationships and new relationships. I also notice something else that we try to sugar coat thing not to be so mean about things. However, I have lots a male friends and when they want to talk about something they text me about out maybe in that sense we don’t have to look at each other. When I do have a conversation with my guy friends and we are talking about a relationship and they never sugar coat anything they are always saying “do you really want to know the true cause you might not want to hear what I’m going to tell you”. Also they are talking to me but doing other things like playing video games, watching T.V or eating. It has never really bothered me but my boyfriends it a different sorry I want him to look at me and make sure he is paying attention to me but now I know that that’s the way males and females communicate with each other.

Reaction to or examples of Tannen findings

Hey students. I am a 'lil disappointed not to see any reactions to the Tannen film, so I'll start. I was dating someone once who was very elusive: handsome, but elusive. My woman friend asked me what color were his eyes. I said, "He doesn't have any!" He did, but I couldn't remember ever reallly seeing them.
"They say" that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. (Is it true, men?) Maybe there should be a saying: "The way to a woman is through her eyes," although if the connection isn't there, the woman can be annoyed by an "unrequested" gaze. But if you have her "attention" and want it to last, lOOk!

Recommending a post below

As Gloria Steinam says in the post below that says "this is a link", "Until there is democracy in the home, there will be no democracy outside the home." Hey! Great posts and comments, everyone. You are making this work.

Beautiful Girl

I have TVF 300 something or whatever, and we were on a topic today about how women in sports aren't really glorified based on their winnings on the sport event. We watched a clip where this golfer name Michelle Wei was sponsered by Cindy Crawford. Keep in mind that Michelle never won a gold tournament. The narrator mentioned," She plays golf, she's gorgeous, and has a nice personality". But, she was sponsored a lot due to her "cute" looks. Now, we compare it to...umm...I think her name was Pat or something. She's a race car driver and won a couple races. She wasn't endorsed or anything =/ just had a serious interview. No fancy photo shoot or cutting the rope like Michelle did.

The point was that even though a girl is in sports, she still has to have beauty. The professor pointed out that if it was a guy playing a sport and gets endorsed, they get endorsed based on their winnings and status regardless of what they look like.

"Arranged" marriages

  • With Western culture: Fall in love - then get married.
  • With traditional cultures: Marry - then learn to love.
we need to figure out how to blend the two.

A Gender Moment illuminates A B or C

A embedded gender expectations, B the social control of gender roles, C or the breakdown of traditional gender roles. Examples:

  • A a man getting down on his knees to ask for a hand in marriage
  • C a woman police officer giving men a ticket or an arm hold
  • C two people of the same sex happily holding hands
  • C a little girl teasing a little boy
  • C a woman president
  • A a man president
  • C a scientifially created "man" having a baby
  • A + C an unmarried woman having 8 babies
  • A different household rules for when brother gets home vs sister gets home
  • A different tasks allocated in the household
  • A different locales for dreams (women dream indoors; men dream outdoors)
  • B Rape of lesbians in Africa as method of curing them of homosexuality
  • ABC "Get me a beer"
  • AB covering C covering in style in Vogue
  • B two doors into the university in Teheran
  • A + B? date rape C?
Now that you know what a gender moment is - comment here the next time you take note of something in life which seems to be a gender moment. Code it A B or C. In your comment, you can describe it using all the space you need. If you need to begin a whole new post about one and receive comments, that's ok too.
